Crail — Balcomie Links¶
The closest thing to pure links in Fife: a short, quirky, joyful clifftop course at Fife Ness — the easternmost tip of Fife — hugging the rocky coast. Sea in play on almost every hole, wind in your face, natural hollows, shared greens and bunkers faced with old railway sleepers. Crail Golfing Society (founded 1786, the 7th-oldest club in the world) has played golf here since 1857; Old Tom Morris laid out the first nine in 1895, extended to eighteen in 1900.
Location¶
Crail, East Neuk of Fife — about 12 miles southeast of St Andrews, roughly a 25–30 minute drive. Map.
The Course¶
Par 69, 5,861 yds. Short by championship standards, but the wind and the coastline do the defending. Not a course for power — a course for imagination: punch shots into the wind, bump-and-runs over shared ground, putts from one green to the next. The 5th "Hell's Hole" (447 yds) is the hardest — a risk-reward drive over the beach; the par-3 14th "The Cave" plays from an elevated tee to a green encircled by pot bunkers with the beach out of bounds right; the 4th "Fluke Dub" dog-legs along the shoreline; and the 205-yard par-3 18th finishes long at the green. History¶
Old Tom Morris, 1895 (first nine), completed 1900. The society itself dates to 1786. Co-host of the 2019 Scottish Amateur Championship (with Craighead); home of the annual Ranken Todd Bowl. NCG Top 100s Scotland #11. Constantine's Cave sits below the 14th tee. Named holes: 1 "Boathouse", 3 "The Briggs", 4 "Fluke Dub", 5 "Hell's Hole", 13 "Craighead", 14 "The Cave".

Car: A917 through the East Neuk; about 25–30 min from St Andrews. Parking at the clubhouse.

The natural pick when the wind is workable; when it blows hard, Balcomie's exposure is the whole point — embrace it.
