Panmure¶
Probably the purest hidden links in Scotland: sandy, dune-backed, zero houses, zero development. A classic Angus links where the layout does the talking — flat-looking from the ground, but the middle stretch through dunes and gorse is world-class. Exactly between sand and grass, if that is the definition you want.
Location¶
Barry, Angus, near Carnoustie — about 30 miles from St Andrews, 45–50 min drive. Map.
The Course¶
Par 70, 6,551 yds. The signature 6th is named "Hogan" (SI 1, 414 yds): Ben Hogan practised here in secret for two weeks before winning the 1953 Open at Carnoustie — his only Open appearance — and recommended the bunker that now guards the hole. A memorial plaque and the Hogan room in the clubhouse document the visit. The middle stretch through dunes and gorse is where the course lives: the 12th and 13th wrestle the meandering Buddon Burn, the 234-yard 15th is the longest par 3 with six bunkers, and the railway line flanks the 14th (remodelled by Donald Steel in the late 1980s).
