Carnoustie — Championship Course¶
The full-blooded version of links golf: massive dunes, the deepest bunkers in the game, and a brutal finishing stretch (16–18) with the Barry Burn crossings at 17 and 18. Flat, exposed and wind-swept — you earn the sea views here. An Open Championship venue since 1931.

The Course¶
Par 72, 6,945 yds from the medal tees (up to about 7,400 from the championship tees). Original course 1842; James Braid redesigned it 1926–37; Martin Hawtree modernised it 1999–2003. Winners here include Hogan (1953), Watson (1975) and Molinari (2018) — with Van de Velde's 1999 collapse in between. The signature par-5 6th "Hogan's Alley" (520 yds) demands a daring line between the OB fence and fairway bunkers — the drive Hogan hit fourteen times out of fourteen in 1953; the 245-yard par-3 16th is the "hardest par three in the world" (Tom Watson); the 17th "Island" lands in an area almost surrounded by the Barry Burn; and the 444-yard 18th "Home" crosses the burn — Van de Velde's graveyard. The Barry Burn crosses four holes (6, 16, 17, 18); the 4th and 14th share a double green.

History¶
Open venue since 1931: 1931, 1937, 1953, 1968, 1975, 1999, 2007, 2018. Also the 2021 AIG Women's Open (Anna Nordqvist), Senior Open and Amateur Championship host. James Wright's pre-1937 redesign of the final three holes created the toughest closing stretch in golf. Golf Monthly UK&I Top 100 #8; voted the toughest course in Britain & Ireland.

Green fees: £360 (2026, high season May–Oct); £249 April; £480 (2026) for the three-course ticket (Championship + Burnside + Buddon). High season rises to £450 in 2027. Handicap limit 28 men / 36 women. Book online at carnoustiegolflinks.com, up to 12 months ahead — no ballot.

Book well ahead. If the Championship fee stings, the Burnside is a cheap add-on with real links character.
